Gerard Elmore-- 2009 Hawaii Reel Stories Host

If you are curious about what’s going on in the local film and television industry, look no further than Hawaii’s Reel Stories.  The long-running television series debuted in 2004 — the brainchild of Producer Don Brown, and continues to air today (with new host and FAVAH board member Gerard Elmore) on Oceanic Cable’s OC16.

You just got served...Films, that is -- by Don Brown.

Don Brown serves it up.

Don came to islands way back in 1988, after stints at Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and PBS Los Angeles, and became the the film curator at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, as well as the manager of the Art House at Restaurant Row.  It was his experience at the Art House that was the catalyst for his tv show.

“One of the theaters at the Art House was equipped with a digital projector from Sony, which enable local filmmakers to show their work without converting to expensive 35mm stock.  I soon realized there were many filmmakers statewide  had no outlet for their work outside of yearly film festivals, and that premise became the pitch to OC16 to start “Reel Stories”. — Don Brown

Oceanic committed to the series, and five years later, Hawaii Reel Stories continues to document and showcase all aspects of film making in Hawaii, from behind the scenes action on big movies, to small independent ones, to writers, music makers, performance artists…the list goes on.   On top of all that, Hawaii’s Reel Stories is also providing “networking opportunities for film aficionados across the state, and to focus on film activities on all the islands, not just focusing on Oahu.”

In the near future, Brown hopes to use HRS to create an interactive presence among the film community via the internet, and plans an expansion into some key Mainland markets with significant Hawaiian populations such as New York, California, Washington State, Nevada and Utah.
